Schistosomiasis, shallow-water fisheries and human resilience around Lake Victoria

Schistosomiasis is a disease of poverty that leads to chronic ill health. Over 240 million people are infected with schistosomiasis, with 600 million at risk of infection. In this study, we worked with the Univeristy of St Andrews to test the impact of stocking catfish (predators of the parasites host: snails) in Lake Victoria (East Africa) on human infection as a means of biocontrol.

Data analytics: Generalized linear mixed models, occupancy models, and N-mixture models.

Partners: University of St Andrews, Pelagic Ecology Research Group.

Development of echosounder module for the OceanBox Data Platform

Development and testing of an innovative approach to process extensive echosounder data using the OceanBox Data Platform (by Sustainovate AS) within the Microsoft Azure cloud. This state-of-the-art service automates the labor-intensive aspects of echosounder data research, streamlining the preparation of large datasets for subsequent scientific analysis.

Data analytics: Microsoft Azure and databricks, python (echopype package), R-shiny app, Docker, and image processing.
